The Lady Taverners - Sailing Project |
|
a |
|
Vicki was on hand at the Ridgeway
Sailing club last week on behalf of the Lay Taverners in support of
the RORO Sailing Project. The Lady Tav is a new innovative Martin 16
dingy specially designed to accommodate the need of disabled sailors
of all abilities including
wheelchair bound and was originally |
|
 |
launched in October 2004 courtesy of
funding by the Lady Taverners. Affectionately
known as the Lady T, the dinghy’s main purpose
was to provide taster sailing lessons to
encourage young disabled people to take up the
sport, leading to racing |
|
but the project has proved so
successful that all age groups have become
involved. The boat which is completely
unsinkable even when totally flooded and fitted
to accommodate wheelchairs, is also entered into
all the Martin 16 Regattas and is usually crewed
by one able-bodied and one disabled crew member
although on many occasions she has an all
disable d crew. With the Olympics coming to
London in 2012, it is essential to bring on in
particular the younger generation of sailors to
continue the great British successes stories of
recent years and Lady T will play a major part
in the preparation |

Lincoln’s Theatre Royal, Vicki returned to the region on 19th
October to open the new, state of the art recycling centre in

community to make full use of the facility. “Recycling needs to be a
way of life to us all and I am pleased to lend my support to the
recycling campaign in Lincolnshire and throughout the country,” she
said. “I am really impressed by the facilities that the site provides;
it’s a million miles from the image of the traditional tip and the rag
and bone man. The range of materials which can be separated for
recycling is remarkable.” |

Romford Greyhound Owners Association |
|
a |
|
Sleek,
streamlined and breathtakingly fast, greyhounds provide a great deal
of excitement during their racing careers but what happens to them when they retire? In some cases the animals
|
|
 |
need to be
re-homed and that is where Romford Greyhound
Owners Association comes in. On Sat 25th
June, Vicki was invited to attend a special meeting at Romford Stadium
where she was asked to hand over the retiring Go Lannahn Go to his |
|
new owners on
behalf of the charity. Originally founded some
35 years ago, this was the 1000th greyhound RGOA has found a new home for
since moving to its present kennels in 1999. “It was quite a night,”
says Vicki “The charity do a wonderful job raising money and awareness
as well as finding happy homes for the dogs.” During the evening Vicki
also presented a number of trophies for sponsored races. “There was a
lot of walking involved,” she laughs. “There were quite a few races.”
Chairman of the RGOA Doug Hayes said, “It was a terrific night and Vicki was
superb, chatting to everyone and really entering into the spirit of
the occasion.” The evening also helped to raise further funds for the
charity. |

Comic Heritage |

|
Over
the years, Vicki has enjoyed a long association with Comic Heritage,
which is part of the Heritage Foundation. The Foundation’s
aim is to combine paying tribute
to Britain’s |
|
 |
wealth of talent while raising money for worthy
causes through their charity, the Arts and
Entertainment Charitable Trust. The fund raising
events include staging concerts, tribute
evenings, luncheons and
|
|
erecting permanent memorials in the form of Blue
Plaques. The pinnacle of the Trust’s year is in
June at the Heritages highly prestigious Annual
Awards Luncheon when today’s performers are
honoured at a star studded gala ceremony, an
event that Vicki attends on a regular basis.
Most recently, Vicki attended a lunch at The
Grosvenor House Hotel in honour of friend and
colleague John Inman. During the event there was

The Lady Taverners |
|
a |
|
In recent years Vicki
has become an active member of the Lady
Taverners, a fundraising branch of Lords
Taverners, crickets official charity. Lady
Taverners owes its formation to Baroness
Thatcher who posed a problem
to the all male club when she |
|
 |
became Britain’s first woman
Prime Minister. It was tradition for every Prime
Minister to be made an honorary member of Lords
Taverners but obviously this was not possible
and so Lady Taverners
was formed with
the Baroness |
|
awarded honorary title Lady
Taverner no. 1. A number of female cricketing
legends such as Rachel Heyhoe Flint and a host
of celebrity and corporate members quickly
joined her. The charity organises regular events
nationwide ranging from gala balls, dinners,
lunches, quiz nights and wine auctions to
celebrity golf days and fun runs. In September
2003, Vicki joined one such event in aid of
breast cancer. The London Flora Light Challenge
took place in Hyde Park consisting of a 5km run.
‘It was a wonderful day and the weather
was perfect,’ says Vicki. ‘We all completed the
run although in my case it was more of a gentle
jog really.’ Vicki was joined by an array of
familiar faces from the world of television and
theatre including pictured actress, comedienne
and singer Faith Brown, news presenter Angela
Rippon, former women’s England cricket captain
Rachel Heyhoe Flint and well known actresses
Lynne Miller, Liz Fraser and Sheila Steafel |

Love,
Light & Laughter Show - Mark Brandist |
|
a |
|
Vicki is no
stranger to hosting charity events such as fashion shows and
concerts up and down the country, but the Love, Light and
Laughter Show in London on the 5th of October,
was a particularly special event as it was organised by
Vicki’s entire family in memory of Vicki’s young nephew
Joshua. Joshua tragically died of a rare brain disorder on
Mother’s Day last year. Top of the bill was celebrity medium
Mark Brandist. Throughout the evening, he helped to reunite
guests with their loved ones bringing laughter and
reassurance along the way in his own inimitable style.
Messages were interspersed with musical interludes provided
by the beautiful voice of Maria Miele. “Joshua was a
remarkable little boy,” explains Vicki. |
|
 |
“He brought
inspiration to so many. We are all very spiritual people
and feel that Josh benefited greatly from working with
healers during his illness. We wanted to do something he
would have approved of and we think the mix of
spiritualism and entertainment would have appealed to
him.” The event proved hugely successful and raised
several thousand pounds which was divided between Joshua’s
favourite charities. |

felt she had been chosen to play the role of Emma, wife of Frankie, a

weighed by the advantages of possible success. Other subjects up for

career and achievements in the theatre and her forthcoming UK tour in
the Ray Cooney farce Funny Money. The interview concluded with Vicki

Monday 24th
October saw Vicki make a welcome return to the Gordon Craig Theatre,
Stevenage in her capacity as Theatre Club Patron, for the First Night
and after show party of Ian Dickens production of the farce, Caught In
The Net. “It was the first opportunity I’ve had to visit the club this
year since my |
|
 |
performances at the
theatre in Salad Days and I was determined to be there,”
explains Vicki. “It was great to be part of the audience for
a change. Although I was delighted that Salad Days was to
open at the Gordon Craig and I would be among |
|
friends, it was also
quite nerve racking for the same reason so this was a
real chance to relax and be entertained as well as catch
up on events and goings on with club members. I was particularly pleased to see so many
familiar faces and greatly encouraged by the number of people attending.
The performance was hilarious and it was good to see so many friends
and colleagues not just in the cast but also the audience.”
The play starred Jeffery Holland, Trevor Bannister, Julie Buckfield,
Judy Buxton, Carolyn Lister and Terry O’Sullivan. David Callister and
Patric Kearns who are regular performers in Stevenage were among the

The Rhys Daniels Trust |
|
a |
|
On October 8th
Vicki attended the 2005 Butterfly Ball in aid of The Rhys Daniels
Trust. The Daniel’s family story came to the knowledge of the nation
when Rhys became the first child in the world to receive a bone marrow
transplant in a bid to cure him of the traumatic and terminal illness
Late-infantile Batten’s Disease. Sadly, the bid failed and both Rhys
and his sister Charley died of the disease. Parents Barry and Carmen
founded the Rhys Daniel’s Trust to provide comfort and support for
other families in a similar situation. Each year, the Trust holds a
number of Charity Balls and fund raising events of which Vicki has
been a regular supporter for several years. |

|
Haven House Hospice |
|
a |
|
Haven
House Hospice is a charity with which Vicki has close personal links
and supports on a regular basis. The Hospice, which opened in 2001
providing sanctuary and respite care for children with terminally ill
conditions, is located in Woodford, Essex and is run on the strength
of donations raised partly by |
|
 |
organised events. In the late spring, Vicki attended the
Annual Charity Ball which this year had a Hollywood
theme attracting over 500 guests including:- Patsy
Palmer, Shane Ritchie, singer Kenzie from Blazin, |
|
Squad,
auction host for the evening Paul Ross and Chingford MP
Ian Duncan Smith and his wife Betsy. The event raised
enough money to provide 144 worth of respite care for a
child at the hospice.
The Summer Craft
Fayre took place on 17th July and was also attended by
Vicki and several members of her family. An estimated 2-3 thousand
people supported the event held in the grounds of the hospice
incorporating such attractions as fire dancers, stilt walkers and a
huge array of stalls and games. Other celebrities present included

Gemstone Hope Appeal |

On Saturday 18th June 2005, Vicki attended a charity
dinner at the Midland Hotel Manchester in aid of The Gemstone Hope
Appeal. Gemstone was set up in 2004 as part of the Caron Keating
Foundation to raise as much money as possible for |
|
 |
various charities close to everyone’s heart. With 2005
witnessing the 45th
anniversary of television’s popular soap Coronation Street, Gemstone
saw this as the perfect opportunity to join forces to raise money for
this years chosen charity of the Caron |
|
Keating Foundation and The Alzheimer’s Society. The
evening, which included a five course dinner and
entertainment provided by Paul Wilson, Toyah Willcox and Rick
Wakeman, raised over £12,500 with the aid of a celebrity auction and
raffle. The event, hosted by Fraser Hines of Emmerdale and Robert
Duncan from Drop the Dead Donkey was also attended by numerous other
celebrities including Gloria Hunniford and most of the cast of
Coronation Street.
Accompanied by her husband, Director of Photography Graham Fowler,
Vicki contributed to the auction by bidding and winning an autograph
of Sir Edmund Hilary, the first man to reach the summit of Mt
Everest. Vicki’s husband was on a lucky streak winning a Manchester
United football signed by the team, which he returned to be
re-raffled. |
